Using search limiters

limiters available in the Daily Dispatch collection allow very focused searches to be performed. The limiters are based upon predefined types of text that were identified and "tagged" through automatic process performed at the Perseus Project to provide this funtionality. Currently nine limiters have been incorporated into the collection that can be used to narrow searches (see figure 8):

  • personal name
  • place name
  • organization name
  • newspaper name
  • company name
  • military unit
  • death notice
  • marriage notice
  • advertisement

These limiters are available in each of the three search types: basic, Boolean and proximity. Refer to the help pages for each search type for detailed instructions.

Use the pulldown button to select a region of a text to search within (e.g., personal name, place name ). This region will be the context in which all the terms entered in the text boxes will be evaluated.

Important note when searching using named entities:

Named entities were identified and processed using automated procedures and, as a result, there is some margin of error to be expected when viewing search results. Common personal names such as "Price" or "Banks" may be interpreted as measurements of currency or financial organizations, respectively. Please be aware of this when performing searches and evaluating results.
